About Xela

pronounced "shay-la"

Xela Rysstad, MA, RCC

As a racialized person, I deeply understand the personal and collective impact of systemic oppression on mental health and well-being. My work as a therapist and consultant is grounded in both my lived experience and my commitment to anti-racism, equity, and inclusion (EDI). I help individuals and organizations navigate the ways in which race, power, and privilege shape their experiences, and I offer both emotional support and practical tools to confront and heal from these systems of harm.

In therapy, I create a space where clients can explore the complex ways racial and social identities intersect with their mental health, self-worth, and relationships. My approach is intersectional, recognizing that the impacts of racism, colonialism, and other systems of oppression are deeply personal and generational. My belief is that healing and empowerment arise from a deeper understanding of these dynamics, and from actively working to challenge them.

As a consultant, I provide education, training, and guidance to organizations committed to building cultures of equity, belonging, and anti-racism. I work with teams to examine how systems of oppression show up in their work and provide actionable steps to foster environments where all individuals are valued and can thrive.

Through both therapy and consulting, I strive to create spaces where the collective liberation of all marginalized groups is not just a possibility, but a shared goal.

My Therapeutic Approach

As a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) with extensive experience in the healthcare sector, I provide a trauma-informed, supportive space where you can explore your emotions and experiences in the context of the systems of oppression that impact your life. Together, we’ll examine how intersecting forms of marginalization shape your mental health, relationships, and sense of self.

In our work, we’ll seek to understand the patterns formed by these systems, uncover pathways to healing, and focus on building your strengths and resilience. My aim is to help you gain deeper insight into your experiences, fostering self-compassion and empowering you to live a more authentic, balanced life.

I am deeply committed to being an ally to all marginalized groups, including people of all races, genders, sexual orientations, abilities, body sizes, and backgrounds. My approach is rooted in cultural humility and intersectionality, ensuring that your lived experience is honored with respect and sensitivity. You will find a safe space here, where your identity is acknowledged and celebrated.

With humility and respect, I acknowledge the unearned privilege of living, working and learning on the unceded and stolen lands of the Lekwungen-speaking peoples of the Esquimalt and Songhees First Nations, who have been stewards of these lands since time immemorial. I also acknowledge the harm caused by colonization and am wholeheartedly committed to the ongoing work of decolonization and reconciliation.
